VMx BASIC STAGE MAKEUP APPLICATION
CLEANING: Start with a clean and moisturized face and body. This should be done about an hour before makeup application. Use your own unscented moisturizer.
CONCEALER: Apply concealer to dark areas of your face such as under eyes, and any place that may create an uneven tone in the foundation.
FOUNDATION: Use a sponge that is moistened with water or slightly dipped in moisturizer, or a foundation brush and apply to your face, (avoiding the eyelids) neck down to your costume line, hairline, and ears. If you’re on the front row also apply to the back of the neck if your hair is short, or pulled up. Try to use the bright light of a window or lighted makeup mirror to check for even coverage and check with your makeup checker before proceeding with the rest of your makeup. It’s easier to correct this before application of powder and blush to avoid having to redo everything. This is for competitions and not regular performances. Your own foundation base with good coverage is sufficient for those types of performances.
POWDER: Apply a light dusting of translucent powder once your foundation has been checked to set the foundation base.
EYESHADOW: Cover the entire lid with the medium mauve colored eyeshadow blending above the crease to just under the eyebrow. This is a very pigmented eyeshadow trio, so a little goes a long way. Remember to blend well to avoid harsh lines. It is recommended to use a brush rather than a sponge applicator for the eyeshadow application. Next, apply the darker toned shadow in the crease of your eye blending across the crease about two thirds of the way. Blend well as it is very pigmented to avoid any harsh lines. Don’t use this color above the crease to avoid looking like you have been punched in the eyes. A small “>” is then created from the crease to the lash line. The lightest shimmer pink is applied above the mauve color just under the eyebrows to create a highlight that brightens the eyes. The same color is also applied sparingly to the center of the lid over where your iris is to help lighten the base color and also brighten the eyes.
EYELINER: Using a liquid, pencil, or powder black eyeliner (whichever you prefer) line the upper lid from inside corner to outer corner lifting at the outside edge slightly creating a thin line, not a wing. Line the lower lid under the eyelashes from about the middle of the eye to the outer edge. If using magnetic lashes, make sure to draw a line suitable for the lashes to adhere to, and that the liner is black. Don’t use the magnetic liner under the eyes as it may pull the lashes down and create a problem with them staying in place.
EYEBROWS: The brows should have a defined look that is a few shades darker than your natural color. If your hair is blonde use a light brown. If your brows are gray use a charcoal color. Keeping a defined but natural looking brow line is the goal. Please shape your brows by waxing/plucking. Extend your brows if they are short, toward the outer edge of the corner of the eye by placing a pencil from the corner of your nose up to the outer corner of the eye, that’s where the brows should end. Avoid heavy thick eyebrows or a very thin line. The goal is for face framing eyebrows.
BLUSH: Using a makeup brush, smile, and apply blush from the “apple” of your cheek diagonally up to your hairline in a triangle shape, blending well. Avoid getting too close to the nose, starting under the middle of the eye/cheek and blending to the hairline.
Set makeup again with another light dusting of powder. (You may also use a setting spray if that is your preference, lightly applying it.)
EYELASHES: Trim your eyelashes to fit your eyes prior to applying them. Be sure to trim eyelashes from the thicker, outer edge. Apply a thin coat of lash glue to the lashes with a toothpick or brush that comes with the glue, letting it set up for a few seconds, and apply the lashes to the base of your eye following the eyeliner. Start tapping them into place from the inner eye to the middle then out towards the outer edge of the eye. If you need help, ask your roommate or makeup coordinator to help you apply them. PLEASE practice this before a competition to make the day of the competition less stressful for all! This will also help to determine if there are any sensitivities to the lash glue.
MASCARA: Apply mascara after lashes are set in place to incorporate your own lashes into the false lashes.
