What Happens at a Rehearsal?

We begin by warming up our bodies and voices and developing healthy vocal skills. We then work on our music, sound and visual performance.

As a guest, you can simply watch and listen, or join us on the risers when invited. We’ll help you follow along, introduce you to members and answer your questions. There is no obligation to join.

Do I need to be a trained singer?

No. Our members come from many different musical backgrounds. You should be able to sing in tune and learn to hold your part, but we all have to start somewhere. Our rehearsals include regular vocal instruction to help every member continue growing.

Do I need to read music?

No. Music-reading skills are helpful, but they are not required. Members receive sheet music and audio learning tracks that make it possible to learn by listening.

What kind of music do you sing?

We sing four-part a cappella harmony in the barbershop style, without instrumental accompaniment. Our performances combine close harmony with musical expression, movement and showmanship.

What are the four voice parts?

Tenor sings the highest harmony.
Lead usually carries the melody.
Baritone weaves above and below the melody.
Bass provides the lowest notes and foundation of the sound.

You don’t need to know your part before visiting. We’ll help you discover where your voice fits most comfortably.

Do members perform and compete?

Yes. Vocal Matrix performs throughout Upstate South Carolina at community gatherings, private events, seasonal shows and other special occasions. We also participate in regional competitions and have performed on the International stage.

Members are encouraged to participate in performances they can manage. Competition preparation requires an additional level of commitment.

What commitment is expected?

Members are expected to attend rehearsals regularly, learn their music and visual plans by the requested dates, practice between rehearsals and contribute positively to the chorus. We work hard, support one another and have a lot of fun doing it.

Is there a financial cost to belong?

Our members are asked to pay annual dues and a small costume fee to help cover our expenses. But don't let that be a reason not to join us! We have a financial assistance program for members in need.
